Bienvenidos to Minnesota

This is us... Somos nosotros...

Our first month has been full of lots of new things for Jorge and remembering positive things about Minnesota for Lani.  

Nuestro primer mes ha sido lleno de muchas cosas nuevas para Jorge y recordando cosas positivas de Minnesota para Lani.

Our masterpiece lasted longer than we though he would, but this image means that spring is arriving!  

Nuestra obra de arte duró más tiempo de lo pensado, pero el siguiente imagen muestra que ya viene la primavera!

For Easter, we tried to include traditions from both of our cultures!  

Para Semana Santa, intentamos incluir tradiciones de ambas de nuestras culturas!

We looked for fresh fish... But in Minnesota that's not so easy!  

Buscamos pescado fresco... pero en Minnesota no es tan fácil!

And fresh coconut... Which was really challenging!  We had to buy 3 coconuts just to get a good one!  

Y coco fresco... que es super dificil!  Tuvimos que comprar 3 cocos solo para encontrar uno bueno!

And even though it was challenging to find the ingredients, we did end up being able to cook the traditional Holy Week food of fish, coconut rice and beans, and potato salad.  

Y aunque fue complicado encontrar los ingredientes, terminamos cocinando la comida tradicional de semana santa de pescado, arroz de frijol, y ensalada de payaso.

And it turned out deliciously!  

Y salió riquísimo!

We also did the US tradition of dying Easter eggs!  Jorge's eggs turned out beautiful!  Lani's were are disaster.  

También hicimos la tradición estadounidense de pintar huevos de pascua!  Los huevos de Jorge salieron hermosos.  Los de Lani fueron un desastre.


There's a lot going on in our minds and hearts during this transition to Minnesota, but we are trying to enjoy it and be intentional about embracing our cultures.  More reflections to come.  

Hay mucho pasando por nuestras mentes y corazones durante este tiempo de transición a Minnesota, pero estamos intentando a disfrutarlo y ser intencional en celebrar nuestras culturas.  Más reflexiones por venir.

El verano en Minnesota es algo especial.  Lo hemos estado disfrutando al máximo y abandonado por completo el proceso del blog.  Aquí les actualizamos de como pasamos nuestro primer verano Minnestano! Challenges and Awesomeness // Retos y Positivos

Not all of moving to Minnesota has been rain drops on roses and snowflakes on mittens.  Nor has it all been dog bites or bee stings.   It is important to recognize and validate the challenges as well as the amazing things that come with transition.  Here we reflect a bit on what a couple specific challenges and positives that we have experienced since moving to Minnesota from Colombia a couple of months ago.   No todo ha sido chévere y emocionante desde que hemos llegado a Minnesota.  Tampoco ha sido todo maluco y difícil.  Es importante reconocer y validar los retos además de las cosas hermosas que vienen con la trancisión.  Aquí reflexionamos un poco sobre retos específicos y experiencias positivas que hemos vivido desde que nos hemos mudado a Minnesota de Colombia hace un par de meses. COMIDA // FOOD

Food is an important part of culture.  It is a way to get to know a culture, share your culture with others, and a way to feel close to home when you are far away.  La comida es una parte importante de la cultura.  Es una forma de conocer una cultura, compartir la cultura con otros, y una forma de sentirse cerca de casa cuando uno está lejos. When Jorge's English class celebrated their volunteers, we made a video teaching how to make empanadas in order to share an element of his culture.  Cuando la clase de ingles de Jorge celebró a los voluntarios, hicimos un video de cómo hacer empanadas para compartir un elemento de su cultura. We had a lot of fun making that video... and the empanadas were delicious!  Lo pasamos muy bien creando el video... y las empanadas salieron sabrosas!  But Jorge has also tried a lot of foods that are common in Minnesota... spaghetti, nachos, waffles, pickles, burritos, and Caribou Coffee...   Pero Jorge tambi...
